Abstract

Gabriele Fischer is medical director of the Addiction Clinic, Department of Psychiatry & Psychotherapy, MUV, where substance use disorders and non-substance dependent patients (e.g. pathological gamblers) are treated in addition to a variety of research programs, with a double-assignment to the Center for Public Health. As a scientist she has more than 140 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is consultant of WHO & UN and board member of the scientific committee of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA). G. Fischer has been involved in comprehensive international research co-operations and is a member of multiple international scientific associations.

Techniques

G. Fischer has acted so far as principle investigator in five EU Grants, in addition to transatlantic co-operations with the US (e.g., NIDA funded studies) and more recently pioneering work in Afghanistan (see CV). Furthermore, she has extensive experience with regard to investigations on alternatives to coercive sanctions in patients with substance use disorders. Moreover, G. Fischer and her team have extensive experience in evaluating the cost effectiveness of treatment interventions. Many of her scientific publications serve for eliciting the views of key stakeholders from both health/welfare and justice sectors for the need of an early, standardized, multiprofessional and holistic diagnostic process by trained professionals to initiate as early as possible an adequate treatment, not only to increase the patients quality of life but also reduce societal costs.
